Vulcan’s aim is to produce climate-neutral lithium and provide renewable energy as part of its ZERO CARBON LITHIUM™ project. From the Palatinate. For Europe. Vulcan is determined to drive the transformation towards a climate-neutral future.

Let's go: Vulcan as a pioneer.

Vulcan wants to extract battery-grade lithium from the hot underground brine of the Upper Rhine Graben. The ZERO CARBON LITHIUM™ project is based on existing and commercially proven technologies. Vulcan will thus establish a local source of lithium for the European battery industry and also produce renewable energy for the region.

Palatinate as a location of the future

Palatinate as a location of the future

Here in the Palatinate, we are in a particularly favourable geological location. To put it more precisely, there is huge energy potential in the form of hot thermal water lying dormant between a depth of 2,500 and 4,000 metres. Only a few regions in Germany offer such favourable conditions for the use of geothermal energy. The Insheim geothermal power plant utilises the thermal energy contained in the thermal water and has been supplying more than 8,000 households with climate-neutral electricity from renewable energy since 2012. Vulcan is also planning to construct further drilling sites for the extraction of geothermal energy in order to supply numerous municipalities in the Palatinate with sustainable energy in the future.

Geothermal energy – a sustainable source of energy

Geothermal energy – a sustainable source of energy

Geothermal heat, also known as geothermal energy, is a renewable energy source that is obtained from the natural heat within the earth. Deep geothermal energy utilises heat from deeper layers of the earth’s crust. This involves drilling wells to access deeper water reservoirs, the energy contained therein then being used to generate heat or electricity. Geothermal energy is seen as an important alternative to fossil fuels and can therefore play a significant role in energy supply in the future.

Why we are convinced of geothermal energy

Why we are convinced of geothermal energy

Climate-neutral: In contrast to fossil fuels, electricity and heat generation from geothermal energy is CO2-neutral.
Sustainable: The recirculated deep water heats up again underground and can therefore be reused to generate energy.
Reliable: Compared to other renewable energy sources, geothermal energy is available at all times, regardless of the weather and time of day.
Regional: Geothermal energy is available to us locally and therefore makes us independent of imports.

Towards the future with ZERO CARBON LITHIUM™

Towards the future with ZERO CARBON LITHIUM™

At Vulcan, we have a vision for the future: ZERO CARBON LITHIUM™. In addition to generating climate-neutral energy, we also want to be the first company in the world to produce CO2-neutral lithium in order to realise the idea of truly climate-neutral electromobility. That’s why we don’t just use the thermal water as a source of energy: we use a tried-and-tested process to extract valuable lithium from the cooled thermal water. The thermal water is then returned to its underground reservoir in a closed circuit.
