In 2022, Vulcan took over the Insheim geothermal power plant from Pfalzwerke AG and has been operating it ever since. As part of the acquisition, the operating company of the geothermal power plant was renamed Natürlich Insheim GmbH. The power plant has been in operation since 2012 and has been feeding CO2-neutral electricity into the local power grid since then. Apart from producing electricity, the power plant is primarily used for testing and optimising the lithium extraction process. To this end, Vulcan has set up two pilot plants there, which have already run through several thousand cycles and have led to numerous new findings for improving lithium extraction.
Facts and figures Data on the power plant.
Renewable energy from deep geothermal energy is at the heart of the ZERO CARBON LITHIUM™ project. For this reason, Vulcan’s geothermal power plant Natürlich Insheim, which is operated by Natürlich Insheim GmbH, already provides CO2-neutral electricity for more than 8,000 households in the south of Rhineland-Palatinate.
- Thermal water temperature: approx. 163°C
- Maximum flow rate: 80 l/s
- Maximum output: 4.8 MW
- Electricity generation per year: 33 GWh
- Hours of use: encoded_tag_open 8,000 h/a <
For the region Renewable geothermal energy.
In future, the power plant will not only produce green electricity, but also provide CO2-neutral heat. Together with EnergieSüdwest AG (ESW) and Thüga, the neighbouring municipality of Insheim is to be supplied with sustainable heat from geothermal energy. Vulcan is responsible for generating the CO2-neutral heat, while ESW and Thüga are responsible for distributing the heat to the residents of Insheim via heating networks.
Visit our Insheim geothermal power plant Communication and transparency.
Our aim is to keep political, economic and environmental interest groups and the neighbouring population fully informed and involved in the dialogue. For this reason, we attach great importance to a broad range of information, open dialogue and transparency.
This also includes offering guided tours of our geothermal power plant in Insheim. The guided tours sometimes provide information on the development progress of current projects and give a realistic impression of the plant and its operation.
